Charles is a middle-aged newcomer in The Call of the Wild who, with his young brother-in-law Hal, buys Buck and his sled team at Skaguay, a man with weak, watery eyes who is manifestly out of place on the North trail.

A middle-aged, lightish-colored man with weak and watery eyes and a mustache that twists fiercely up over a limply drooping lip, he sets out for the North with his young brother-in-law Hal and his wife Mercedes — a family party manifestly out of place on the trail.
Charles works alongside Hal to take down camp and load the sled, but their efforts are full of motion and short on method. Like his companions, he is a stranger to the hard discipline the Klondike demands of dogs and drivers alike.
