Hal is a callow young newcomer of nineteen or twenty in The Call of the Wild who, with his brother-in-law Charles, buys Buck and his team at Skaguay to attempt the North trail despite being plainly out of place there.

up to Ch.5Hal is one of the inexperienced newcomers who take charge of Buck's sled team in The Call of the Wild by Jack London. A youngster of nineteen or twenty, he wears a big Colt's revolver and a hunting-knife on a belt that fairly bristles with cartridges — the most salient thing about him, advertising a callowness sheer and unutterable. With his brother-in-law Charles, he buys Buck and his worn mates at Skaguay to chase fortune on the Long Trail.
Hal travels with Charles and his sister Mercedes — a family party manifestly out of place in the North. Quick to reach for the whip and slow to take the seasoned advice of onlookers, he sets out to manage a team and a trail he plainly does not understand.
