Sol-leks

Sol-leks is a sled dog in The Call of the Wild by Jack London, an old husky, long and lean and gaunt, with a battle-scarred face and a single eye that flashes a warning of prowess. His name means the Angry One, and when he marches deliberately into the team even the lead dog Spitz leaves him alone. Like his fellow veteran Dave, he asks nothing, gives nothing, and expects nothing, wanting only to be left in peace.

Sol-leks dislikes being approached on his blind side, a lesson Buck learns the hard way when the old dog slashes his shoulder to the bone; afterward the two keep an untroubled comradeship. In harness Sol-leks is utterly transformed, alert and fiercely devoted to the work, and the pride of trace and trail is his as much as it is Dave's. He pulls under the drivers Perrault and François alongside Buck, Spitz, Pike, Dub, Billee, Dolly, and the rest of the team.

Faithful and enduring through the grueling runs of the Northland, Sol-leks takes his quiet, mournful pride in the toil even as starvation and exhaustion wear the whole team down.
