Timber Wolf

The timber wolf is a wild wolf Buck meets in the northern wilderness in The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Long, lean, and in poor condition, he is far smaller than Buck, who makes three of him in weight and whose head towers over the wolf's own.

Buck first comes upon him in an open place among the trees, erect on his haunches with his nose pointed to the sky, sounding the long-drawn howl that Buck has begun to hear from the forest. Wary and afraid at first, the wolf becomes a wild companion to Buck, a creature of the wilderness that stands apart from the world of men and sled-dogs Buck has known.
